암살범 챕먼은 비틀스 멤버였던 존 레논에게 강한 유대감을 느꼈다. 그래서 존 레논의 흉내를 열심히 내고 다녔다. 존 레논의 노래 앨범을 모두 사서 들었고 레논이 일본 여자 오노 요코와 결혼한 것을 모방하여 여러 명의 아시아계 여자와 사귀기도 했다. 그러나 이런 암살범들이 대개 그렇듯이, 챕먼도 정서 불안이 극도의 상태에 도달하게 되었다. 그는 더는 자기 자신과 존 레논 사이의 현격한 차이를 극복하지 못한다는 것을 알고, 레논을 해치워야겠다는 엉뚱한 생각을 품었다. 즉 자기가 모방해야 할 대상을 파괴함으로써 더는 모방할 필요가 없게 하는 것이었다.
